Psalms 80:16Sefaria

A heartfelt plea rises to God, asking Him to look down, remember, and protect the very roots He planted and established with His own hands. The primary approach among commentators is to view this planting as a deeply rooted sapling or an established vine. Others see it as a firm foundation or stable base This imagery carries different layers of meaning. It can represent the Israelites themselves [אבן עזרא], or the Land of Israel, which serves as the fertile soil where this vine is planted [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, this firm foundation points toward Jerusalem and the Temple, which act as the spiritual base designed to receive heavenly abundance from God [רד״ק, אלשיך].

Growing from this foundation is a shoot or branch, continuing the botanical imagery of a flourishing vine Some connect this growth directly to the concept of building and development [מלבי״ם]. On a national and historical level, this branch symbolizes the Israelites Looking back at history, this choice reflects how God strengthened Jacob and selected him over Esau, even though Esau was also deeply cherished as a son by his own father [רש״י]. Another unique perspective views this flourishing branch as a reference to King David, whom God affectionately called His son, and through whose merit the Temple was ultimately established [אלשיך].

The prayer concludes with a powerful request for God to strengthen, embrace, and bind this planting to Himself in a close covenant Woven into this request is a deep sense of pain. The psalmist reminds God that He once held this vine close and gave it great strength. Because it now feels as though He has abandoned it, the desperate cry is for God to return, look after His planting, and restore His protective care [רד״ק].
