Psalms 91:10Sefaria

Divine protection offers a profound sense of security that shields a person from the unpredictable dangers of life. This absolute guarantee of safety covers both the individual and their family against disasters and illnesses. Because of its powerful nature, this psalm has historically been recited as a song of protection to ward off harm and disease [תורה תמימה].

The primary approach among commentators is that this divine shield blocks all forms of physical blows, disasters, and sicknesses This safety is absolute; harm will not reach a person even through an indirect cause or a random chain of events The promise of safety is reinforced to emphasize its certainty [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the protection extends far beyond the physical walls of a home, encompassing a person's entire immediate environment, including their spouse and children [רד״ק].

Taking a more vivid approach, the danger itself can be viewed as having its own independent will. Even if another person attempts to cause harm, the destructive force itself will refuse to strike. In this view, even if a plague has already managed to enter the home, it will actively hold itself back and avoid coming anywhere near the individual [מלבי״ם].

This concept of total security is deeply rooted in the miraculous events of the Exodus from Egypt. The promised protection echoes the way the Israelites were shielded from Pharaoh's harsh decrees and the final plague that struck the firstborn. Just as God passed over their homes, divine providence guarded the Israelites so completely that even Egyptian firstborns attempting to hide inside Hebrew houses were struck directly by God, while the destructive forces were entirely prevented from harming the Israelites

Beyond physical safety, this divine guarantee includes a profound level of mental and emotional security. God's providence actively guards a person's peace of mind, ensuring they remain entirely protected even from the distress and anxiety caused by bad dreams [תורה תמימה].
