תהלים, פרק צ״א, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 91:7Sefaria

Standing in the center of a catastrophic event, surrounded by mass destruction, a person can experience absolute protection from God. While disaster strikes the masses on every side, the protected individual watches the ruin but remains completely untouched and whole.

The primary approach among commentators understands this as a miraculous rescue during a widespread calamity. This disaster is viewed through two main lenses. On one hand, it represents a physical threat, such as walking directly through a raging battlefield [רד״ק, מאירי] or surviving the rapid spread of a deadly plague [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. On the other hand, the danger is understood as a spiritual assault, involving attacks from demons and unseen forces seeking to inflict harm [רש״י, אלשיך].

The imagery places a thousand threats on the person's left side [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. This specific direction is understood because the right side is explicitly mentioned immediately afterward, a contrast noted in early Rabbinic teachings [תורה תמימה]. When describing what happens to these thousands, most commentators explain that they are the casualties falling dead in war or from disease. However, a unique perspective interprets this action not as falling, but as camping. In this spiritual view, thousands of demons may set up camp on a person's left side, yet they remain powerless to approach or cause harm [רש״י].

There is a striking numerical difference between the threats on either side, with a thousand on the left and ten thousand on the right. This vast gap highlights the natural advantage and greater strength that the right side holds over the left [מאירי]. From a spiritual standpoint, the right side is more closely aligned with holiness. Because of this proximity to the sacred, impure forces multiply tenfold, exerting significantly more effort to attach themselves and attack specifically from the right [אלשיך].

Yet, regardless of whether the threat is physical or spiritual, and despite the overwhelming numbers pressing in from every direction, the promise remains absolute. The danger will simply not approach. The individual can rest in the complete confidence that evil and destruction will not touch him at all.
