תהלים, פרק צ״א, פסוק י״ג

Psalms 91:13Sefaria

עַל־שַׁ֣חַל וָפֶ֣תֶן תִּדְרֹ֑ךְ תִּרְמֹ֖ס כְּפִ֣יר וְתַנִּֽין׃

Divine protection reaches its highest level not when danger is merely avoided, but when a person can walk directly through life-threatening situations with complete safety. The presence of lethal predators and venomous reptiles, specifically lions at various stages of growth [תורה תמימה, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and dangerous, poisonous snakes [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], serves to highlight this reality. The primary approach among commentators is that walking among such deadly creatures represents absolute, miraculous safety. Even if someone were to accidentally step on these animals, they would remain completely unharmed, as though a lasting peace had been established with the wild beasts [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. This is not a natural defense where angels guide a person away from harm. Instead, it is a direct, supernatural intervention from God. A person can move through the greatest perils and survive, much like the Israelites in the desert, where God Himself used the clouds of glory to eliminate dangerous desert creatures from their path [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Within this promise of safety, there is a careful distinction in how a person interacts with the different threats. When dealing with the larger, fully grown lions and snakes, the action is simply walking upon them. In these cases, the person is passively protected and left untouched. On the other hand, the interaction with the younger, smaller lions and snakes involves an active trampling. Here, the person actively overcomes and crushes the threats that stand in their way [מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, rather than a literal encounter with wild beasts, these predators can be understood as a powerful metaphor. Stepping upon the lion and the snake represents a profound spiritual and practical victory. Through this lens, a person uses their wisdom and intellect to conquer strong, aggressive enemies that rise against them [מאירי].
