Ruth 3:3Sefaria

Naomi prepares her daughter-in-law for a daring, fateful night mission designed to secure their future and ultimately establish a royal dynasty. The preparations for this encounter go far beyond mere physical grooming; they involve deep spiritual purification, divine providence, and sophisticated spiritual tactics.

Preparing with water and fragrant oil can be understood simply as the standard grooming habits of honorable people [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the primary approach among commentators reveals a profound spiritual dimension. The washing represents an inner cleansing from the spiritual residue of idolatry, while the fragrant oil symbolizes enveloping oneself in Commandments and good deeds. Even though she had already converted, she was guided to renew her commitment to the Commandments and repent for her past. This spiritual fortification was necessary to increase her merit and ward off any heavenly accusations before embarking on such a perilous task [אגרת שמואל].

The choice to wear fine garments specifically refers to Sabbath clothes, demonstrating that even those living in poverty should maintain a separate set of clothing for the Sabbath. Yet, walking through the night in conspicuous attire posed a risk of arousing suspicion. To address this, some suggest she carried the garments on her shoulder, only dressing once she arrived secretly at her destination [מלבי״ם, אגרת שמואל]. Alternatively, her clothing may not have been expensive at all due to her poverty, but she was guided to arrange and wear her modest garments with a cleanliness and dignity that naturally enhanced her beauty [אגרת שמואל].

Though the journey to the threshing floor—traditionally situated in the lower parts of the city to harness the winds [תורה תמימה]—was taken alone, it carried a hidden promise of companionship. Most commentators explain that Naomi assured her daughter-in-law that her own spiritual merit would descend alongside her to offer protection. Another perspective suggests this assurance was meant to comfort the younger woman and ease her fears about the highly unusual mission, as if to say that had it been possible, Naomi would have made the journey herself [אגרת שמואל]. Once there, she was to remain completely hidden. She was specifically warned not to reveal herself to Boaz until he had finished eating and drinking, ensuring he would be in a joyful and receptive state of mind [ביאור שטיינזלץ, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, אגרת שמואל].

This raises a fundamental question: why choose a plan so daring that it bordered on inappropriate, rather than approaching Boaz through conventional channels? One explanation is that this vulnerable method was designed to awaken his compassion. Finding her lying silently at his feet, rather than acting inappropriately, would prove that her intentions were entirely pure and for the sake of heaven [אגרת שמואל].

A deeper approach uncovers a profound spiritual calculation. Knowing that this union was destined to produce the messianic line and King David, there was a certainty that spiritual forces of impurity and heavenly accusers would attempt to sabotage such a holy match. By choosing a method that superficially resembled immoral behavior, the plan effectively distracted and blinded the accusing forces—much like the scapegoat sent away on the Day of Atonement. This tactical deception allowed the monumental historical event to unfold without spiritual interference [אגרת שמואל]. Ultimately, it was the future merit of King David—who would famously rise at midnight to praise God—that echoed back in time, protecting his ancestor from anger or a curse when Boaz awoke in terror at midnight on the threshing floor [נחל אשכול].
