After the barley and wheat harvests conclude, bringing an end to three required months of waiting, the time arrives to find a permanent home for Ruth. Her days of temporary survival and poverty need to be replaced with lasting security. Naomi takes the initiative, stepping far beyond conventional boundaries to secure her daughter-in-law's future.

Naturally, a mother whose daughter becomes a widow is eager to see her remarry quickly. In contrast, a mother-in-law often resists seeing her widowed daughter-in-law marry again, as a new marriage threatens to erase the memory of her deceased son. Yet Naomi's greatness and piety shine through as she overcomes her personal grief. She advocates for Ruth exactly as a biological mother would [נחל אשכול, אגרת שמואל, אשכול הכופר]. Because Ruth cared for Naomi with the deep devotion of a daughter, Naomi responds in kind, treating her completely as her own child rather than merely a convert or an in-law [אגרת שמואל, אלשיך]. At the same time, her actions serve a dual purpose. Naomi operates both as a mother-in-law seeking to repair the soul of her departed son, and as a loving mother actively securing her daughter’s future [חומת אנך].

Naomi expresses her desire to find a place of rest for Ruth, which signifies a permanent solution through marriage. The primary approach among commentators is that a woman does not achieve true, settled peace until she marries and builds a home [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, אשכול הכופר, שטיינזלץ]. This pursuit is also born of gratitude. Since Ruth worked tirelessly to provide food and physical comfort for Naomi, Naomi feels a profound duty to secure a restful life for Ruth in return [אשכול הכופר]. Naomi's declaration carries the weight of an oath, reflecting an absolute determination that she herself will not rest until a solution is found [אגרת שמואל].

Naomi clarifies that she is searching for a situation that will truly be good for Ruth, recognizing that not every marriage guarantees a happy life. Her goal is to find a righteous, Torah-observant husband who will provide genuine spiritual and physical well-being, both in this world and the next [מלבי״ם, אגרת שמואל]. She emphasizes that this search is entirely for Ruth's benefit, dispelling any thought that she is acting out of selfish motives or solely for the sake of her late son. She declares that her primary intention is Ruth's exclusive happiness. Even if a new marriage were to bring no spiritual benefit to her deceased son, Naomi would still seek her daughter-in-law's well-being with a complete and open heart [אלשיך, אגרת שמואל].
