Yet, in this specific instance, the angel expresses surprise at the prophet's inability to figure out the meaning himself [אברבנאל].

The angel expects this independent comprehension because the core concepts of the lampstand and its seven lamps are not new. Rather, they are familiar to those who understand the secrets of God, as the physical lampstand in the Temple already points to these profound truths [מלבי״ם].

In response, the prophet openly admits his inability to uncover the hidden message within the vision [מצודת דוד]. However, his admission does not mean he is ignorant of the deep, general meaning behind the lampstand. Instead, he simply does not know how to decode the specific message it represents in this current vision, nor does he understand its exact role in the prophecy unfolding before him at that moment [מלבי״ם].
