A prophet encountering a profound and mysterious vision naturally seeks clarity. Witnessing a wondrous sight, Zechariah immediately recognizes that the images before him hold deep prophetic significance rather than being mere passing illusions. Driven by this realization, he raises his voice to address the angel guiding him, asking for a clear explanation [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].
Even though the physical details of the vision are plain to his eyes, the underlying message remains hidden. He openly acknowledges to the angel that he does not understand the specific purpose or the true meaning behind the sights he is experiencing [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
His primary confusion centers on a completely supernatural process playing out in his presence. He watches as olive trees seemingly harvest themselves, with the oil being produced and flowing entirely on its own into a central bowl, and from there directly into the lamps of the Menorah. He asks the angel to explain the meaning of this miraculous phenomenon, as the entire continuous process occurs without a single moment of human involvement or touch [רש״י, צאינה וראינה].
