עמוס, פרק ב׳, פסוק ט״ז

Amos 2:16Sefaria

וְאַמִּ֥יץ לִבּ֖וֹ בַּגִּבּוֹרִ֑ים עָר֛וֹם יָנ֥וּס בַּיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

The impending military downfall of the Israelites will be an event of total and shameful devastation, designed to break the spirit of even the most elite warriors. This severe defeat will come as a direct punishment for a society deeply corrupted by civil offenses, including social injustice, prostitution, and idolatry [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At the center of this collapse is the ultimate soldier, a man usually clad in heavy armor and weaponry, representing the peak of bravery and physical strength [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ordinarily, this is a fighter who hardens his heart for combat [מצודת דוד], stepping onto the battlefield fully confident in his invulnerability and guaranteed victory [אבן עזרא]. However, because true courage stems from the heart, the sheer terror of that day of judgment will cause his inner resolve to melt away. Overwhelming fear will take control, leaving him completely unable to face the enemy [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. His immense physical strength will prove useless for combat, leaving escape as his only option for survival [מלבי״ם].

When this once-fearless soldier runs for his life, he will do so stripped bare. The primary approach among commentators is that this does not necessarily mean literal, absolute nakedness. Rather, it indicates that the desperate fighter will throw away his weapons [רש״י] and strip off his heavy armor and thick clothing. Driven by panic, he will shed anything that adds weight or restricts his movement, doing whatever it takes to flee as swiftly as possible [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In a moment of extreme distress, the proud warrior will willingly abandon his honor, his wealth, and his garments, focusing solely on a rapid, unburdened escape to save his own life [מלבי״ם].
