וְעַל־בְּגָדִ֤ים חֲבֻלִים֙ יַטּ֔וּ אֵ֖צֶל כׇּל־מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וְיֵ֤ין עֲנוּשִׁים֙ יִשְׁתּ֔וּ בֵּ֖ית אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

Social and religious corruption often weave together into a harsh reality where the vulnerable are exploited for the sake of personal wealth and twisted worship. The primary approach among commentators is that corrupt leaders and judges abuse their power to oppress the poor, using their ill-gotten spoils to fund lavish celebrations. They forcefully seize the garments of the impoverished as collateral—often targeting those who refuse to bow to their unjust demands—and never return them. Instead of showing mercy, the wealthy use these stolen clothes as cushions and bedding, reclining in luxury during their banquets. Adding a layer of legal corruption, [אבן עזרא] notes that this behavior also points to the public perversion of justice, as the judges openly twist the law to strip the poor of their belongings legally.

These banquets do not take place in private homes, but rather beside altars and inside temples. Most commentators identify these locations as shrines dedicated to idol worship, such as those of Baal. As they recline in these temples, the corrupt leaders drink wine purchased with money extorted through arbitrary fines and unjust financial penalties placed on innocent people. Taking the abuse of power even further, [רד ק וצאינה וראינה] add that they drink this stolen wine out of silver and gold vessels that were confiscated from the very same victims.

While the primary focus is on idolatry and social theft, a different perspective offered by [אהבת יהונתן] shifts the critique toward the priests serving in the Temple of God. In this view, the corruption is one of spiritual emptiness. The priests perform their duties without proper devotion or sincerity in their hearts, focusing entirely on the outward pride of wearing the priestly garments rather than the inner essence of serving God.

Ultimately, the profound severity of these actions stems from the destructive combination of sins against God and sins against fellow human beings, as highlighted by [אברבנאל ומלבי״ם]. Much like the surrounding nations that commit cruel crimes using the property and lives of others, the leaders of Israel conduct their religious rituals using stolen wealth, the plunder of the poor, and extorted wine. This behavior reflects a deep moral decay and a severe desecration of God's name, as their supposed religious devotion is built entirely upon violence and the suffering of the needy.
