Society has fallen to a deep moral low, where economic exploitation, judicial corruption, and severe sexual immorality are tightly woven together. Those in power have lost their basic humanity, ruthlessly crushing the vulnerable and abandoning all sense of shame, even within their own families.
The primary approach among commentators is that the powerful subject the poor to physical violence and humiliation. Corrupt leaders and thugs send enforcers to drag the destitute by their hair, throwing them to the ground so that the very dust of the earth clings to their heads. Others view this abuse through the lens of economic oppression. The wicked are consumed by a desire to steal even the tiny patch of dusty earth upon which the poor stand [רש״י]. This greed is so extreme that they are willing to hire false witnesses to have an innocent poor person executed simply to inherit his land [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that these oppressors closely inspect the boundaries of the land, seeking any opportunity to encroach on the property of the vulnerable [אהבת יהונתן]. Conversely, there is a psychological interpretation focusing on hypocrisy. The wicked put on a facade of humility, keeping their eyes cast down to the dust in fake submission, while secretly using this pious image to manipulate and control the defenseless [אברבנאל].
This oppression extends into the manipulation of justice and daily life. Some commentators see a direct critique of the judicial system, where judges accept bribes from the wealthy to pervert the law, twisting the path of justice away from the poor Alternatively, this distortion refers to the physical reality of the oppressed. Out of sheer terror of their abusers, the poor and the righteous are forced to abandon the main roads, traveling instead through hidden, winding paths A third approach suggests that it is the wicked themselves who have entirely abandoned the path of humility and moral living, replacing it with shameless arrogance
This complete absence of shame reaches its peak in the realm of sexual immorality. All moral boundaries are erased when a father and his son go together to engage in prostitution with the same woman, feeling no embarrassment in each other's presence. The severity of this act is magnified by the understanding that this is not just any woman, but one who is already engaged to another man, making their actions a case of absolute adultery
Such behavior is not merely a failure to control physical urges, but a deliberate rebellion. By acting with such blatant disregard for morality, they are intentionally throwing off their spiritual responsibilities They actively crush the divine command to be holy, choosing instead to profane the very holiness that God bestowed upon them Furthermore, destroying family purity in this way damages the lineage of the nation and ultimately drives away the Divine Presence. There is no greater desecration of God than forcing His presence to depart from the people [אהבת יהונתן].
