After experiencing God's kindness, the people chose to rebel against Him, bringing about a time of severe consequence. If God holds accountable nations who never knew Him, He will certainly punish His own people who turned against Him despite His enduring kindness [מצודת דוד].

This punishment takes the form of a heavy, inescapable distress that will pin the people exactly where they stand. The primary approach among commentators is that this immense pressure will weigh them down, completely paralyzing them in their camps and stripping away any chance to flee from the enemy's sword. The burden of this trouble will be so overwhelming that they will simply collapse in their places [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While the consensus views this distress as a crushing pressure, there are varying perspectives on how this weight operates. Some interpret it as a complete inability to carry a heavy burden, while others argue it represents an active force causing intense pain and restriction [אבן עזרא]. Offering a different perspective, [המלבי״ם] suggests the distress acts like a physical barrier, effectively fencing the people in and blocking all paths of escape.

To illustrate the sheer force of this burden, the impending doom is compared to an overloaded wagon.
