ט֥וֹב שֵׁ֖ם מִשֶּׁ֣מֶן ט֑וֹב וְי֣וֹם הַמָּ֔וֶת מִיּ֖וֹם הִוָּלְדֽוֹ׃

The true measure of a life is rarely apparent at its beginning, nor is it defined by material wealth. Instead, a person's authentic value emerges through the steady cultivation of character, acts of kindness, and the enduring legacy left behind at the journey's end. A moral reputation stands above even the most prominent symbols of ancient luxury, such as precious oil. A good name represents the profound respect a person earns through decent behavior, refined character traits, kindness, and dedication to Torah study [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, תורה תמימה].

Commentators draw several essential distinctions to highlight why a stellar reputation surpasses fine oil. First, the fragrance of even the best oil is confined to its immediate surroundings and inevitably fades over time. In contrast, a good name expands, crosses borders, and remains etched in human memory forever [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רש״י]. Second, luxury oil is a commodity purchased with wealth, accessible primarily to the rich. A good name, however, is acquired at no financial cost; it is equally available to anyone, rich or poor, solely through their actions [תורה תמימה, אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, a good name possesses spiritual qualities that defy the laws of nature. Just as oil naturally floats above all other liquids, a commendable reputation elevates a person [רש״י]. Yet, while physical oil tends to flow downward—much like anointing oil poured upon a head—a good name rises upward toward God [רש״י, תורה תמימה].

The strength of a good name also serves as a protective shield. Physical oil acts as an accelerant for fire, but individuals shielded by their good name, such as Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, were miraculously saved from a fiery furnace. Conversely, Nadab and Abihu, despite being anointed with sacred oil, were consumed by fire [רש״י, תורה תמימה]. Ultimately, the crown of a good name, earned through personal choices, outshines even inherited crowns of priesthood and royalty that are historically conferred through anointing oil [אלשיך]. Offering a different perspective, some suggest the comparison is not about superiority, but origin. In this view, the stellar reputation of the righteous stems directly from the fact that they function like fine oil, actively illuminating the world for the benefit of others [תעלומות חכמה].

This focus on ultimate value naturally extends to the entirety of the human lifespan. The primary approach among commentators is that at the moment of birth, the future remains entirely concealed. While a birth brings universal joy, no one can predict the path the child will take, nor whether they will grow to be righteous or wicked. The day of passing, however, serves as a definitive summary. At this final milestone, the good name acquired through a lifetime of effort is permanently secured and can no longer be lost. Consequently, bidding farewell to someone who has successfully completed a life of integrity warrants a deeper, more profound sense of joy than the celebration of a birth. Often, a person's true greatness is only fully recognized after they are gone. This phenomenon occurred with the leaders of the Israelites in the wilderness. It was only upon their passing—when Miriam's well, Aaron's clouds of glory, and Moses' manna ceased—that the people truly comprehended the immense power and merit of their leadership [רש״י, צאינה וראינה].

Moreover, the end of life is not viewed as an absolute conclusion. Rather, it marks a transition to a state of rest, spiritual reward, and the World to Come, freeing the individual from the exhausting toil of this world [אבן עזרא, תורה תמימה]. For the righteous, passing away does not extinguish their light. On the contrary, their merits and good deeds continue to illuminate the world, so much so that they are considered alive even after they have departed [אלשיך]. Finally, another perspective views the relationship between birth and death through the lens of cause and effect. Rather than a sudden or punitive end, the passing of a righteous person is seen as the peaceful, natural completion of the exact number of years allocated to them from the very moment they were born [תעלומות חכמה].
