Ecclesiastes 7:25Sefaria

The pursuit of meaning often requires a person to explore the highest peaks of intellect as well as the darkest depths of human error. By examining the extremes of behavior, one can truly understand the value of truth, recognizing that concepts are often best understood when compared to their exact opposites. King Solomon reflects on his own journey, noting how he actively directed his attention and thoughts [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד] to deeply search and examine the world around him [מצודת ציון]. His goal was to seek out wisdom and careful calculation, though commentators understand the nature of this pursuit in various ways.

From a purely intellectual standpoint, this calculation is the ability to logically deduce one idea from another through intense concentration [מצודת דוד]. It involves sophisticated strategy [ביאור שטיינזלץ] or simply the raw power of thought [מצודת ציון]. Viewed through a scientific and philosophical lens, wisdom represents the natural sciences and philosophy, while calculation specifically refers to mathematics and precise measurements [רלב״ג].

Alternatively, a spiritual approach suggests this was a search for the underlying reasons behind God's Commandments. This includes the effort to unravel profound mysteries, such as the paradox of the Red Heifer or calculating the exact time of the final redemption [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. Another perspective sees this as a shift from abstract study to focusing on practical Commandments, recognizing that every person will ultimately have to give a strict accounting for their actions [תעלומות חכמה].

After pursuing profound wisdom, the investigation takes a sharp turn toward the opposite extreme, seeking to understand wickedness, foolishness, and madness. The purpose of exploring such dark subjects is to carefully evaluate the flaws of wickedness, thereby appreciating true wisdom by observing its direct opposite [מצודת דוד]. It is also a test to see whether genuine wisdom and thoughtful calculation can ever truly coexist with evil and foolishness [אבן עזרא].

In this context, foolishness is understood as pure stupidity, which ultimately leads to a state of complete madness and irrationality [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This deep dive into human failure exposes the tight bond between ignorance and sin. A distorted mind and a lack of proper education are the direct causes of wicked behavior and madness [תעלומות חכמה]. A clear example of this destructive foolishness is the temptation to follow a seductive woman, a devastating sin that offers absolutely no benefit to a person [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Finally, this exploration also includes the attempt to fully comprehend the nature of heresy, seeking to expose the deep confusion and madness that lie at its core [רש״י].
