Ecclesiastes 7:24Sefaria

Human beings possess a natural drive to uncover all wisdom and fully understand the world. Yet, this pursuit eventually collides with the limits of the human mind, which simply cannot grasp the time that has passed or the deepest secrets of existence.

The primary approach among commentators is that this limitation applies to the general past. Events that have already occurred are far removed from us, making it impossible to know or comprehend them completely Other perspectives view this distance as pointing to specific historical and spiritual events. It may hint at the deep secrets of the six days of creation, which remain remote and difficult to grasp Alternatively, this distance refers to the revelation at Mount Sinai. During the giving of the Torah, in the presence of Moses, God, and His Divine Presence, human beings experienced perfect and clear intellectual understanding. Today, as humanity has moved far away from that era, those concepts have become deep and hidden from our minds [תעלומות חכמה].

Beyond the barrier of time, human comprehension also falls short when faced with matters that are inherently complex and beyond our natural intellect, even if they exist in the present Regarding the mysteries of creation, this serves as a firm warning. A person does not have permission to investigate or deeply ponder realms that are entirely beyond human reach, such as what exists above, what lies below, what came before, and what comes after However, a distinction can be made between the absolute past and profound matters of the present. While the past can never be recreated or truly found, a concept that is simply deep might still be uncovered. A wise person who knows how to search properly can draw out this hidden wisdom, much like pulling advice from deep waters [אבן עזרא].
