By sending messengers to Egypt to secure military assistance and build a massive army, Zedekiah introduces the figure of the second great eagle into the narrative. This desperate reach for Egyptian support to fight Babylon is exactly like the vine stretching its roots toward a fresh water source, attempting to secure and strengthen the royal power that Nebuchadnezzar had originally given him [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that the questions raised about whether such a rebellion will succeed or if the king can escape are entirely rhetorical [רד״ק]. They emphasize the utter impossibility of Zedekiah saving himself from Nebuchadnezzar simply by placing his trust in the Egyptian king [מצודת דוד].

The inevitable failure of this uprising unfolds on two distinct levels. First, Nebuchadnezzar will wage war and conquer the kingdom, an outcome represented in the parable by the violent uprooting of the vine.
