A vision of royal service gone wrong serves as a dark warning of a bitter fate. In his dream, the chief baker sees himself carrying baskets stacked one on top of the other on his head [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The highest basket does not merely hold simple bread, but rather rich delicacies prepared specifically for a king's table [העמק דבר, רש ר הירש].

The deep, unsettling meaning of the dream lies in the unnatural behavior of the birds. Ordinarily, if a bird takes food from a basket, it will either throw the food to the ground to eat it comfortably or knock the entire basket over. In this vision, however, the birds eat the royal food directly from the basket while it still rests on the baker's head [העמק דבר].

Furthermore, birds naturally fear living humans and would never dare to approach and eat directly above a person who is alive. Their bold behavior suggests that they already view the baker as a dead man, someone who poses no threat and gives them no reason to be afraid [רש ר הירש].

Ultimately, the sight of the birds consuming the royal meals serves as a terrible omen. It symbolizes that the baker will not be restored to his former position. Instead, the birds will soon descend upon his lifeless body and eat his flesh [רלב״ג].
