Genesis 40:4Sefaria

The arrival of high-ranking Egyptian officials into the prison drastically changes Joseph's daily routine and social standing. Suddenly, he finds himself interacting with the upper levels of the government, even while locked away. The captain of the guard, identified as Potiphar [שד״ל], takes a personal interest in these new prisoners. Rather than leaving them to the regular prison warden, he oversees them himself due to their high rank and the possibility that they might be restored to power, granting them special conditions [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that he officially appoints Joseph to attend to them [ביאור יש״ר, אבי עזר], though this action is also seen as Potiphar simply remembering Joseph and bringing him to mind [אבן עזרא].

Why Potiphar assigns Joseph to these specific men is a matter of debate. One perspective suggests he does this out of love, seeking to comfort Joseph. Knowing Joseph is innocent, Potiphar wants to show him that even great leaders can end up in prison, a situation guided by God to eventually secure Joseph's freedom [שפתי כהן, רלב״ג, אלשיך]. On the other hand, a contrasting view argues that Potiphar's goal is to burden and humiliate Joseph by reducing him to a lowly servant. This ensures Joseph does not become too proud of his managerial role in the prison or think his release is near [ביאור יש״ר].

Joseph's assignment is not a position of authority over the ministers. Instead, he is placed directly in their presence to care for all their needs. Beyond basic physical tasks, he is brought up from the dungeon to provide companionship. Because these men are educated and wise, they require someone of Joseph's intellect and character to sit with them [העמק דבר]. Joseph takes on this role willingly and with great humility. He recognizes that men of power are accustomed to being served [העמק דבר]. Using his wisdom, he chooses to serve them graciously rather than acting superior, knowing that the future is uncertain and these men might soon return to their former greatness [שפתי כהן].

These officials are not serving a final punishment; rather, they are held in temporary custody, waiting for their cases to be investigated and judged [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that they remain in this holding state for a full year. The timeline cannot refer to just a few days, as the unfolding events leading up to the interpretation of their dreams clearly require a much longer period [משכיל לדוד].
