Genesis 40:12Sefaria

Standing before the royal cupbearer, Joseph decodes the symbols of the dream, translating them into a concrete and immediate timeline. The way he introduces his solution is unique in the Bible to the context of dreams [אבן עזרא], revealing a fundamental principle: the dream itself holds its own explanation. There is no need to search for distant or obscure clues; the meaning is found by simply clarifying and paying close attention to the details that appeared in the vision [העמק דבר]. When addressing the three branches, Joseph groups them together into a single, unified concept, rather than treating them as separate items the way the cupbearer originally perceived them. This subtle shift indicates that the branches share a collective, underlying meaning [הכתב והקבלה].

The primary approach among commentators is that these branches are not literal days, but rather serve as a unified symbol pointing to a specific three-day period Up until this point, the cupbearer's impending fate was death, much like a bare and empty vine. However, in exactly three days, his sentence will be overturned for the better, and he will be restored to his position, placing the royal cup back into Pharaoh's hand [מלבי״ם].

The central question that arises is how Joseph knew with such certainty that the number three referred to days, rather than weeks, months, or years. The commentators offer three complementary explanations. The first approach suggests that Joseph deduced the timeframe directly from the nature of the dream itself. The rapid, continuous sequence in which the vine flowered, budded, and immediately ripened into grapes indicated that the corresponding events would unfold in the shortest possible time, namely in a matter of days Furthermore, the branches in the dream appeared completely identical to one another. While months and years fluctuate with changing seasons and weather patterns, only consecutive days can share exactly the same characteristics [רבנו חננאל]. Another botanical perspective links the structure of the vine to the cycle of time. A single vine represents a full year, and the branches growing from it symbolize the days that make up that year, as opposed to weeks or months which are not directly reflected in the natural life cycle of a plant [גור אריה].

The second approach emphasizes Joseph's logic and practical awareness, noting that a dream interpreter must apply reason to understand what is realistically likely to occur. Joseph was aware that Pharaoh's birthday would fall in exactly three days. Since it was customary for monarchs to host grand feasts, distribute gifts, and pass judgment on their servants on their birthdays, it was highly logical to assume that Pharaoh would not delay the fate of his imprisoned officials for months or years, but would finalize their judgments on that specific festive occasion Another possibility is that the queen was pregnant and expected to give birth in three days, an event that would similarly prompt a royal celebration This reliance on natural logic is consistent with Joseph's later interpretation of Pharaoh's own dreams, where he understood the numbers to represent years, simply because cycles of agricultural abundance and famine do not naturally alternate over mere days or months [פענח רזא].

Alongside these logical and natural explanations, a third perspective asserts that human intellect and deductive reasoning alone were not enough. Ultimately, Joseph arrived at the absolute truth because the Holy Spirit rested upon him. It was God who revealed the hidden secret of the vision and guided his understanding, demonstrating that true interpretations belong exclusively to God
