פרשת מקץ

Genesis 44:14Sefaria

The return of the brothers to the Egyptian ruler marks a moment of deep crisis and a confrontation with a completely unexpected reality. As they arrive, Judah takes the lead, stepping ahead of the rest of the group. Because he had taken personal responsibility as a guarantor for Benjamin, he naturally makes the greatest effort to save him, walking at the head of the camp and entering first [שד״ל, רלב״ג, רש ר הירש]. Yet, the entire group returns together. According to the standard practice of the time, when a group of ten men is apprehended and only one is discovered to be a thief, the entire group is considered accomplices. Consequently, all the brothers are forced to go back and face the ruler [שפתי כהן].

Upon their arrival, they find the ruler intentionally waiting for them [רש״י, ביאור יש״ר, שטיינזלץ]. This deliberate waiting reveals a distinct nobility in his character. On that particular day, he avoids going out to the public tribunal to conduct his usual judgments. Instead, he chooses to remain in the privacy of his own home to spare the brothers the shame of a public trial in front of the Egyptians [משכיל לדוד].

When the brothers finally face him, they throw themselves to the ground. This is not a standard bow of respect offered to a prominent leader. Rather, it is the physical collapse of terrified, bewildered men overwhelmed by a sudden disaster, throwing themselves before the ruler to beg for their lives and plead their case [ביאור יש״ר]. This powerful moment of bowing [שטיינזלץ], which now includes all ten brothers alongside Benjamin, brings the events full circle. It represents the complete fulfillment of the early dream in which eleven stars bow down to the young dreamer [רבנו בחיי].
