II Chronicles 12:14Sefaria

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ הָרָ֑ע כִּ֣י לֹ֤א הֵכִין֙ לִבּ֔וֹ לִדְר֖וֹשׁ אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס}

Rehoboam, the son of a great king living during a crucial historical period, ultimately failed to live up to his spiritual potential. His downfall was not defined by a series of intentional, malicious acts, but rather by a profound sense of spiritual neglect and personal weakness. He was a frail individual who easily surrendered to the pressures of his environment [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When evaluating the source of his wrongdoing, commentators offer different perspectives. One approach points to the influence of his upbringing, noting that his foreign mother taught him to do evil [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective emphasizes that he is not actually accused of committing specific wicked deeds. Instead, the very fact that he failed to actively follow the path of God constitutes the evil attributed to him [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The root of this spiritual failure was a lack of inner preparation and personal effort. Rather than independently seeking to know God, he blindly relied on the negative education he received from his mother [מצודת דוד]. Because his wrongdoings stemmed from mere negligence and a failure to seek the truth, rather than outright heresy or malice, he was judged as someone who sins unintentionally. This lack of deliberate rebellion explains why God ultimately had mercy on him and allowed him to remain on the royal throne [מלבי״ם].

The true tragedy of his reign lies in the scale of his missed opportunity. Had he made even the slightest effort to prepare his heart and draw closer to God, serving the Creator would have become incredibly easy for him. Good helpers and supportive guides would have naturally appeared on his path to assist him, but his failure to take that initial step defined his legacy [חומת אנך].
