דברי הימים ב, פרק י״ב, פסוק ח׳

II Chronicles 12:8Sefaria

כִּ֥י יִֽהְיוּ־ל֖וֹ לַעֲבָדִ֑ים וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ עֲב֣וֹדָתִ֔י וַעֲבוֹדַ֖ת מַמְלְכ֥וֹת הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ {ס}

The transition from a spiritually guided, independent nation to a conquered people serves as a harsh mirror reflecting the choices of the nation. When the people abandon the path of the Torah, they lose their spiritual protection and find themselves entirely at the mercy of foreign powers. Losing their status as a sovereign empire, the people of Judah are dragged against their will into the global political arena. They must now taste the bitter reality of subjugation to the king of Egypt and other foreign nations [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that this harsh experience serves a distinct educational purpose. By enduring foreign rule, the people are forced to recognize the profound difference between serving God and serving mortal kings. They learn the hard way that serving God is ultimately good and easy, and had they remained loyal to Him, no outside force would have ever dominated them. This painful realization is designed to awaken their hearts, urging them to repent and return to God [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. A clear equation is at play: returning to God guarantees freedom from foreign oppression, whereas abandoning the Torah inevitably results in enslavement to the kingdoms of the earth [רש״י].

From a different moral perspective, the contrast between these two types of service demands deep personal introspection. A person can observe how earthly servants act with extreme precision and fear, careful not to deviate in the slightest to avoid angering their mortal rulers. Comparing this intense dedication to the often careless way one approaches the service of God should evoke a deep sense of shame. Recognizing the gap between the fear of flesh and blood and the lack of reverence shown to the Creator imparts a powerful lesson on the proper and necessary respect owed to God [חומת אנך].
