דברי הימים ב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ב׳

II Chronicles 15:2Sefaria

וַיֵּצֵא֮ לִפְנֵ֣י אָסָא֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ שְׁמָע֕וּנִי אָסָ֖א וְכׇל־יְהוּדָ֣ה וּבִנְיָמִ֑ן יְהֹוָ֤ה עִמָּכֶם֙ בִּֽהְיוֹתְכֶ֣ם עִמּ֔וֹ וְאִֽם־תִּדְרְשֻׁ֙הוּ֙ יִמָּצֵ֣א לָכֶ֔ם וְאִם־תַּעַזְבֻ֖הוּ יַעֲזֹ֥ב אֶתְכֶֽם׃ {ס}

The connection between God and humanity operates as a direct, mutual equation. Divine protection and presence are never automatically guaranteed; rather, they serve as a perfect mirror reflecting the choices and behaviors of the king and the nation. As King Asa returns from battle, the prophet steps out to meet him with a profound message about this spiritual reality [מצודת דוד]. He explains that God dwells among the people specifically because they remain loyal to His word [מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that divine providence is always measured exactly by human conduct. As long as the people stand firmly with God, He remains with them, actively watching over them. From this point forward, the future of their relationship can unfold in two entirely opposite directions. If the people continue to seek God, deepen their understanding of Him, and dedicate themselves to His service, He will make Himself known to them in even greater measure, blessing them with goodness and abundance. However, a severe warning accompanies this promise: if the people choose to abandon God, He will in turn abandon them, as the entire relationship relies completely upon their own actions [מלבי״ם].
