II Chronicles 15:19Sefaria

וּמִלְחָמָ֖ה לֹ֣א הָיָ֑תָה עַ֛ד שְׁנַת־שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וְחָמֵ֖שׁ לְמַלְכ֥וּת אָסָֽא׃ {פ}

Following the great victories of the kingdom of Judah, the land entered a prolonged era of peace and stability. The exact nature of this peace, however, is understood in a few different ways. Some commentators [רד ק ומצודת דוד] explain that the absence of conflict refers specifically to internal strife between the kingdom of Judah and the kingdom of Israel. Others [מלבי״ם] suggest that the nation was only free from major, significant wars, while minor border skirmishes likely continued during these years. Taking a broader view, there is an opinion [ביאור שטיינזלץ] that the land enjoyed absolute quiet, completely free from both internal and external conflicts. This total peace lasted for about twenty years, secured by Abijah's earlier victory over Jeroboam and Asa's triumph over the Egyptians.

The timeline of this peaceful era ends in the thirty-fifth year, which introduces a historical difficulty. The king of Israel, Baasha, who later wages war in the thirty-sixth year, actually died during the twenty-sixth year of Asa's reign. To resolve this, some commentators [רש י ומלבי״ם] explain that the thirty-five years do not measure Asa's personal time on the throne. Instead, the count begins from the day the kingdom divided under Rehoboam. By adding Rehoboam's seventeen years, Abijah's three years, and Asa's first fifteen years, the total reaches exactly thirty-five years. Therefore, the year mentioned is actually the fifteenth year of Asa's reign, the same year he fought Zerah the Ethiopian.

This specific count of years carries a deeper spiritual history [רש״י]. The thirty-six years mirror the thirty-six years King Solomon was married to the daughter of Pharaoh. Because of that marriage, a decree was issued causing the kings of Aram to become hostile enemies of Israel. This tension reached its peak in the sixteenth year of Asa's reign. At that time, the kings of Aram and Israel formed an alliance against him, an event that led Asa to make the mistake of bribing the king of Aram with silver and gold.

In contrast to this complex calculation, a more literal approach [מצודת דוד] maintains that the timeline refers directly to Asa's actual rule. According to this view, the quiet and absence of war lasted exactly until the end of the thirty-fifth year of Asa's personal reign.
