God's presence in the world is constant and watchful, actively seeking to support those who place their complete trust in Him. When a person turns away from this divine reliance and chooses instead to depend on human power, they forfeit miraculous protection and are left vulnerable to the natural struggles of life. God observes everything that happens on earth, constantly moving and hovering from place to place to oversee the world [מצודת ציון]. The ultimate purpose of this continuous watchfulness is to grant extra strength to individuals whose hearts are completely devoted to Him and who trust Him entirely [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
This watchful dynamic explains why military threats emerged against the king in the first place. The arrival of these enemies was not actually intended to result in a physical war. Rather, it was a specific act of divine providence designed to test the completeness of the king's heart. Had he withstood this test and maintained his trust in God, He would have fortified the king and caused the massive enemy nations to fall before him [מלבי״ם].
Instead, the king failed. He acted with foolishness [מצודת ציון] because he failed to understand the divine plan at work [מלבי״ם], and his actions ultimately proved that he lacked a true connection to God [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The direct consequence of this lack of trust is a future filled with conflict. In earlier times, when the king relied on God, the land enjoyed peace, and during unavoidable battles, he experienced great success through divine assistance [רלב״ג]. Now, his reality changes completely. Wars are already prepared and destined to come upon him [מצודת דוד]. God will leave him to operate strictly within the bounds of natural law. Moving forward, he will be forced to rely solely on his own human strength in battle, stripped of the divine help that once protected him [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].
