II Chronicles 16:3Sefaria

In the ancient world, political alliances were often fluid, easily broken by the right combination of historical ties, financial incentives, and geopolitical strategy. When the king of Judah reaches out to the king of Aram, he launches a calculated diplomatic campaign to sever the long-standing peace between his rival, the king of Israel, and the Aramean empire ([שטיינזלץ]).

To convince the Aramean king to betray Baasha, the king of Israel, the Judean king presents two compelling arguments. First, he appeals to history, reminding him of the ancestral alliance between their royal fathers. This historical bond carries far more weight than any agreement with Baasha, whose father was a simple commoner lacking royal lineage ([מלבי״ם]). Second, he offers a powerful financial incentive. Recognizing that Baasha may have promised or paid funds to secure Aramean support, the king of Judah immediately sends actual silver and gold to sway the decision in his favor ([מלבי״ם]). This maneuver captures the political reality of the era, where treaties were frequently abandoned for financial gain or shifting interests ([שטיינזלץ]).

The geography of the region makes this betrayal highly strategic. Judah and Aram share no borders, with the kingdom of Israel conveniently positioned between them as a mutual enemy ([שטיינזלץ]). With the stage set, the Judean king makes his core demand to formally cancel the existing agreement with Israel ([מצודת ציון]).

The practical expectation of this broken agreement is viewed in different ways. The Aramean king might be expected to launch an active military campaign against Baasha ([מצודת דוד], [שטיינזלץ]), though it is also possible that a complete withdrawal of support would be entirely sufficient without requiring active combat ([מלבי״ם]). Regardless of the exact method, the desired result remains the same. The goal is to force Baasha to retreat from the Judean border ([מצודת דוד], [שטיינזלץ]). Stripped of his powerful northern ally, the king of Israel would be left completely isolated and would not dare to continue the conflict alone ([מלבי״ם]).
