The judges of Jerusalem are given a strict and clear set of instructions that lay the necessary foundation for true and righteous justice [מצודת דוד]. The demand placed upon them is incredibly rigorous. They are urged forward with a strong warning, reinforcing the heavy weight of the command they carry and the urgency of their task [רש"י].

To fulfill this vital role, the judges must base their work on three central pillars. First, they must operate with a genuine fear of God [מצודת דוד]. This requires them to be extremely careful to avoid violating any prohibitions while carrying out their duties [מלבי"ם]. Second, they must work with deep integrity. This applies specifically to the intellectual and theoretical aspects of the law, demanding complete honesty as they think through and clarify the complex details of each case [מלבי"ם]. Finally, their actions must be done with a whole heart. Whenever they actively carry out their duties, it must be done purely for the sake of heaven. A judge must remain entirely free of ulterior motives, personal interests, or any outside biases [מלבי"ם].
