Solomon's preparation for his building projects required securing a massive amount of raw materials. The demand for such huge quantities of timber directly reflected the unusual size of what he set out to construct.

The primary approach among commentators is that this immense supply of wood was intended for the Temple itself. Because the sanctuary was designed to be exceptionally large, it required a vast amount of resources. The structure was meant to be a true marvel in its sheer size, making the collection of so much material an absolute necessity [רלב״ג, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, a different perspective suggests that this specific request for timber was actually for Solomon's private royal palace rather than the Temple. Since the grandeur of God's house had already been established earlier in the narrative, repeating its massive scale would be unnecessary. Instead, Solomon was asking for extra wood, beyond the requirements for the Temple, to construct his own residence. This royal palace was planned to be large and magnificent, surpassing even the grand palace that Hiram, the king of Tyre, had previously built for King David [מלבי״ם].
