וְעַתָּ֗ה שָׁלַ֧חְתִּי אִישׁ־חָכָ֛ם יוֹדֵ֥עַ בִּינָ֖ה לְחוּרָ֥ם אָבִֽי׃

The correspondence between the King of Tyre and King Solomon continues regarding the construction of the Temple. After a brief pause to offer words of praise, the Tyrian king resumes the practical matters of his letter, detailing the expert craftsman he is sending to assist with the building [מצודת דוד].

This highly skilled artisan was born to a Tyrian father and an Israelite mother [רלב״ג]. The specific details of his lineage help resolve an apparent historical contradiction regarding the craftsman's identity in different records. According to one tradition, the artisan sent at the beginning of the Temple's construction had a mother from the tribe of Dan, and he was a master of working with gold, silver, and plaster. He worked on the project for seven years before passing away. Following his death, King Solomon called upon the artisan's son to take his place. The son, whose mother was a widow from the tribe of Naphtali, specialized exclusively in copper work, and it is this younger craftsman who is recorded in other historical accounts of the Temple's construction [מלבי״ם].

There are two main ways to understand the craftsman's relationship to the royal court based on his introduction in the letter. One approach suggests that he was a generational asset to the royal family; he originally served as the chief expert for the King of Tyre's father, and subsequently became the primary master craftsman for the current king [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the king is simply introducing the artisan by his name, noting that the craftsman shared the exact same name as the King of Tyre himself. In this view, the additional royal honorifics attached to his name do not imply a biological relationship to the king's father. Instead, they serve as titles of deep respect and authority, highlighting the craftsman's immense wisdom and elevated status in society [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
