II Chronicles 2:5Sefaria

King Solomon faces a profound paradox when constructing a physical building for an infinite Creator. Recognizing human insignificance compared to God's greatness, he understands that no physical space can serve as an actual dwelling for Him. After declaring that the house he is building will be massive, Solomon quickly clarifies that its size should not mislead anyone into thinking it will be a literal residence for God He emphasizes that even the highest heavens, far above the visible sky, cannot contain or hold Him. God is the place of the world, but the world is not His place Flowing from this understanding, Solomon expresses deep humility, acknowledging that despite his royal status, he is truly nothing before God [מצודת דוד].

This realization leads to a deep wonder about human capacity. Solomon questions who could possibly gather enough strength to build a structure that is genuinely worthy of God At the same time, this thought serves as a warning against holding back any effort, challenging a person to ask who would dare withhold their strength. Instead, one must try with all their might to build the most magnificent house possible, even while knowing it will never truly approach God's supreme level [רלב״ג].

A natural question arises from this reality. If the building cannot contain God, why must it be built with such massive size and splendor? If it were merely meant to be a living space, an ordinary royal palace would be enough. However, because the structure cannot contain Him and is dedicated entirely to His honor, its immense beauty and scale must reflect the greatness of the One for whom it is built [מלבי״ם]. The true purpose of the building is not to limit God to a specific location, but to serve as a dedicated place for human worship and service [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The actions performed there, specifically the ritual burning of incense, are ultimately meant to awaken within a person profound insights and a deeper understanding of the secrets of spiritual reality [רלב״ג].
