The nationwide census journey continues, mapped out through major geographic and demographic landmarks. The census takers first arrived at a powerful fortress built upon a high rock [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. This specific location was historically part of the territory given to the tribe of Asher [רד״ק].

From there, the journey proceeded through various cities, some situated in the Hermon region. In these settlements, the Hivite and Canaanite nations lived alongside the Israelites [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. The ongoing presence of these foreign nations within the land was a direct result of the original conquest; the Israelites had not driven them out completely, but instead allowed them to remain and pay taxes [רד״ק].

Concluding this stage of their route, the census takers turned south and traveled until they reached Beersheba. Arriving at this city marked the end of their journey in that direction, as it was recognized as the southern border of the land [שטיינזלץ].
