שמואל ב, פרק כ״ד, פסוק י״א

II Samuel 24:11Sefaria

After a long, anxious night of prayer following the census of the people, a divine response arrives with the dawn. The message is not delivered directly to the king, but rather through a personal prophet. The morning hours mark the end of a tense, sleepless night during which David's heart found no rest [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. During that very night, God revealed His word to Gad the prophet. As soon as the king rises, the prophet is already there to meet him with the message [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. This immediate morning revelation serves as a direct answer to David's nighttime prayers [אברבנאל].

Gad holds a unique position as David's personal seer. Alongside Nathan, he serves specifically as a prophet in the king's court [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He earns this distinct title because all of his prophetic messages are intended exclusively for David; he is the chosen channel through which God speaks to the king. Gad retains this title even though this specific event is the only one of his prophecies ever recorded [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

Although the prophet is sent to deliver news of harsh punishments, his purpose is not to rebuke or sadden David for conducting the census. The people were already destined for punishment, and the census merely served as the trigger for it to unfold. In truth, the prophet's arrival at dawn brings a measure of hope. He comes to inform the king that God has heard his prayers. Because of David's pleas, God has chosen to limit and define the impending punishment, ensuring it will be something the people can endure [אברבנאל].
