The ongoing military conflict between the rival camps causes a deep shift in the internal balance of power. The center of authority moves away from royal lineage and lands squarely on military leadership.

The primary approach among commentators is that during this period, Abner poured all his strength and energy into supporting the house of Saul. He fought its wars and worked to firmly establish the kingdom under the rule of Saul's son, Ish-bosheth. However, alongside this loyalty to the royal family, the reality of the war brings out another layer of control. Because Ish-bosheth was never a warrior, managing the ongoing battles requires strong military leadership. As a result, Abner steps beyond his official role as commander of the army. He becomes the most powerful figure in the kingdom, effectively taking over its rule and leadership [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This rise in Abner's power sets the stage for the events that follow. It highlights Ish-bosheth's lack of foresight in choosing to rebuke his army commander at a time when he is entirely dependent on him. At the same time, it explains the boldness and confidence that allow Abner to stand up and openly confront his king [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].
