Rather than appearing in person, Abner sent representatives fully empowered to negotiate and finalize a treaty on his behalf.

Conversely, a Midrashic tradition suggests the nature of this outreach hints at a critical flaw in Abner's behavior, one for which he was ultimately punished. By allegedly opening his message with the words "From Abner to David," he placed his own name before the king's. This subtle slight implied that he viewed David as subordinate to him, failing to show the proper respect due to a monarch [רש"י, רד"ק, אברבנאל].

The message itself addresses the rightful ownership of the kingdom, carrying two parallel meanings. On one level, it serves as a bold political statement and a rhetorical question regarding who truly deserves to rule the land. The unavoidable answer is David, who was anointed by God. On another level, the phrasing acts as a solemn oath. The core of the mission culminates in a straightforward proposal for a pact of peace and friendship.
