שמואל ב, פרק ג׳, פסוק ל״ו

II Samuel 3:36Sefaria

Following a shocking political assassination, a king stands before his nation during a highly sensitive and fateful moment. His public reaction and the grief he displays will either secure the public's trust or condemn him. The primary approach among commentators is that the central theme here is the complete removal of any suspicion that David was involved in the death of Abner.

The public fully understood that the killing took place entirely without the king's knowledge or consent [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This realization came from closely observing David's behavior. He engaged in highly public acts of mourning, such as walking behind the funeral bier, weeping bitterly, and offering a lament [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Although such displays could easily be viewed as a compromise of his royal dignity, they were met with deep sympathy because they were performed with absolute honesty. Truth is naturally evident, and it is impossible to conceal a fabricated performance from the masses [מלבי״ם].

However, a deeper question arises regarding David's true feelings. Did he genuinely mourn the loss of Abner, or was he merely trying to prove his hands were clean? The nation might have accepted that David did not order the assassination, yet they could have still suspected that he secretly rejoiced over the death of a fierce rival who had previously hunted him alongside Saul.

The public's overwhelming response serves as the ultimate proof of his sincerity. There is a well-known principle that whatever comes from the heart enters the heart. When a person's actions resonate deeply and leave a profound impact on others, it shows that his outward expressions match his inner feelings. The fact that the people were genuinely pleased with David's actions proved beyond any doubt that his sorrow was real and profound, rather than a mere political show. The exact measure of sincerity in the king's heart was reflected directly in how well his actions were received by the nation [אלשיך].

Offering another perspective, it is noted that David's status among the people was already incredibly secure. As a rule, everything he did was viewed favorably and accepted without question. Because he enjoyed such unwavering support, he had absolutely no need to stage a fake display of grief just to appease the public. Therefore, his public mourning could only have been completely genuine [מלבי״ם].
