וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ אִ֣ישׁ בֹּ֔שֶׁת וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ מֵ֣עִֽם אִ֑ישׁ מֵעִ֖ם פַּלְטִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־[לָֽיִשׁ] (לוש)׃

The return of Michal to David requires a difficult separation from the man she has been living with. The narrative highlights this removal by noting that she is taken away from her husband, specifically identifying him as Paltiel [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Although previously known simply as Palti, he is now called Paltiel, a shift that sparks a discussion regarding the true nature of his relationship with Michal.

One tradition views this expanded name as a testament to his incredible self-control, suggesting that God Himself saved him from committing a sin. According to this approach, Paltiel recognized the complexity of their union and never touched Michal, despite them living together. To ensure he would not give in to temptation, he placed a sword between them, declaring that anyone who crossed the boundary would be struck down. Because he fled from sin, God attached His own name to Paltiel's. In this light, his general description as a man emphasizes his outstanding righteousness, while his family lineage—associated with the lion—hints that he conquered his physical desires with fierce strength [מנחת שי, רד״ק, חומת אנך].

While this perspective highlights extraordinary piety, [רד״ק] notes that it departs from the simple reality of the events. A more straightforward understanding suggests that Paltiel and Michal did indeed live together fully as husband and wife. However, they did so unintentionally, genuinely believing that their marriage was legally binding and valid.
