The return of the Ark of the Covenant to the center of public and religious life marks a profound turning point for the nation. United around the ultimate symbol of God's presence, the people set out on a journey to restore proper honor to Israel's most vital holy focal point.

David and the nation travel to Baalah, a location widely identified as the city of Kiriath-jearim, which is also known in biblical history as Kiriath-baal or Baale-judah. The Ark had remained in this city for twenty years, resting there ever since its return from the territory of the Philistines, until King David finally resolved to elevate it to its rightful place [רד״ק].

Associated with the Ark is the profound description of God as the One who sits above the cherubim. These winged figures were positioned on top of the Ark, shielding it from above [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This imagery conveys a powerful reality: the Divine presence dwells between the carrying poles of the Ark, serving as a constant symbol of God resting His presence within the nation of Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because it bears this immense spiritual weight, the Ark is worthy of the highest honor. In fact, it is specifically because of the Ark that God is referred to by this majestic title [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, the Ark carries the distinction of having God's name called upon it [מצודת דוד]. This detail is highlighted at this specific moment to reflect upon the Ark's difficult history. Despite being captured and taken into exile in the land of the Philistines, the Ark never lost its holiness. On the contrary, God's name was sanctified upon it precisely during that period of captivity [רש״י, רד״ק].
