King David alters the journey of the Ark of the Covenant. Instead of continuing on the planned path toward his royal capital, the City of David, he actively diverts the sacred chest away from the main road. He guides it toward a new destination: the home of a man named Obed-edom, whose house is located just outside the city limits.
Commentators agree that Obed-edom is a member of the tribe of Levi, holding the role of a gatekeeper for the Ark. Although he is referred to as a Gittite, this title does not mean he has a Philistine background. Rather, he earned this name simply because he had previously lived in the city of Gath. With the journey of the Ark redirected, David chooses this Levite's nearby home as its resting place.
