Initial fear surrounding the Ark of God quickly gives way to a completely different reality. Instead of bringing disaster, the presence of the Ark delivers a special blessing and salvation to the family hosting it. This reveals that when the Ark is treated with proper respect, it causes no harm, but rather brings abundance and goodness [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The Ark was placed right alongside the family. Obed-edom dedicated a specific room for it inside his own home, keeping it close to their daily lives [מצודת דוד]. Even though the Ark remained there in the constant presence of the entire household, not a single person was harmed [מלבי״ם]. On the contrary, hosting the Ark resulted in a tremendous blessing for Obed-edom [מצודת דוד].
This blessing took the form of a miraculous surge in childbirth. His wife and eight daughters-in-law conceived and each gave birth to eight children from a single pregnancy, adding eighty-one grandsons to the family in just one day [חומת אנך].
From this event, a powerful lesson is drawn regarding the importance of hospitality, particularly toward Torah scholars. The Ark of God neither eats nor drinks, and honoring it involved nothing more than simple acts like sweeping the floor in front of it. Yet, it still generated an enormous blessing. Therefore, the reward must be incredibly vast for someone who welcomes a Torah scholar into their home, spending their own money to provide food and drink. This kind of ongoing and holy hospitality gives the scholar peace of mind, enabling him to develop new Torah insights, and ultimately connects the host directly to the Divine Presence [חומת אנך].
