I Chronicles 13:7Sefaria

The journey to transport the Ark of God begins with great momentum, yet a critical error in how it is moved sets the stage for a tragic outcome. According to the Torah, the Levites are commanded to carry the Ark on their shoulders. However, the decision is made to place it on a new cart instead. This direct violation of the Torah's instructions ultimately leads to severe consequences.

Commentators offer different explanations for this flawed decision. One perspective suggests that David and his men were afraid to physically touch the Ark. As a result, they copied the method the Philistines had used in the past when they returned the Ark to the borders of Israel on a cart [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another approach explains that David believed this particular Ark contained the broken pieces of the first tablets. He mistakenly thought the requirement to carry the Ark on the shoulder applied only to the Ark holding the complete second tablets. This error arose because David treated the words of the Torah with a certain lightness, referring to them as songs [חומת אנך]. Regardless of the reason, compromising the rules of the Ark's holiness was considered a grave sin that brought about punishment [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

The Ark is taken from the house of Abinadab simply because it had been resting there up until this event [מצודת דוד]. Abinadab's sons, Uzza and Ahio [רש״י], are tasked with guiding the oxen pulling the cart [מצודת דוד]. They divide the work according to common practice: Ahio walks ahead of the cart to lead the way and keep the path straight, while Uzza walks right alongside it to ensure it does not tip over. This precise arrangement explains how events unfold later on; when the oxen eventually stumble, Uzza is the one standing directly next to the Ark, allowing him to reach out his hand to hold it [רש״י].
