The bringing up of the Ark of the Covenant is marked by a massive burst of joy, music, and physical enthusiasm from both the people and their leaders. The celebration takes the form of passionate dancing and rejoicing before God, carried out with full physical strength and energy.

[רש״י] observes that the parallel historical account in the Book of Samuel describes this intensity by mentioning wooden instruments rather than pure physical might. He explains that these two descriptions complement one another, illustrating that the musical instruments are played with tremendous force and power.

The celebration combines human voices and musical instruments. Vocal singing is used to offer direct praise to God, while instruments such as lyres, harps, and tambourines produce the melodic sounds. However, the commentators draw special attention to the cymbals. Unlike the other instruments that create a melody, the cymbals are made of two pieces of copper struck together, designed purely to produce a loud, rhythmic crash. [רש״י] connects the name of these cymbals to a biblical term for a specific type of locust, an insect famous for the loud, unmistakable noise it generates while in flight.
