While it might appear that Joab is leading a single, unified military force, the original text hints at a different tactical formation. An unusual grammatical structure separates the description of the troops, indicating that they are not simply one broad army of heroes [מנחת שי]. Instead, this subtle phrasing reveals that two entirely distinct military divisions are sent to the front lines together. Joab commands both the regular, general army and an additional, specialized unit of mighty warriors [רד״ק].
