The royal administration relied on a highly organized system of appointed officials to manage the kingdom's natural and agricultural resources. The care of the olive groves, entrusted to an official named Baal-hanan the Gederite, was entirely comprehensive. He oversaw the full agricultural process from the initial planting of the trees all the way through to the harvest [רש״י].

Growing alongside the olives were sycamore trees, which are generally understood to be a specific variety of fig tree. Because these trees naturally thrive in valley environments, they were specifically cultivated in the lowland regions of the kingdom [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג].

The management of the kingdom's valuable oil industry featured a clear division of labor. While one official was responsible for the agricultural side—tending to the groves and harvesting the raw fruit—a completely different official, Joash, was appointed to govern the storehouses where the finished oil was securely kept.
