Within the ranks of King David's military leadership, certain figures stand out not just for their skill, but for the profound respect they commanded. Benaiah son of Jehoiada holds a unique and elevated position in this command structure. Although all the leaders in David's military roster commanded armies, Benaiah is specifically recognized as an army commander as a mark of exceptional honor [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. His distinct status stems from his role as a senior officer leading David's elite group of thirty mighty warriors [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, his authority extended to overseeing the king's personal guard, the Cherethites and Pelethites [מלבי״ם].

His background also introduces an interesting dynamic regarding priestly leadership. A specific designation of chief priest is tied to his record, prompting different views on its exact meaning. One perspective suggests this status actually belongs to his father, Jehoiada, indicating he served as a high priest [רד״ק]. However, others point out that Zadok and Abiathar were the acting high priests during this era. Therefore, the term is understood not in a literal priestly sense, but rather as a title denoting a powerful leader or important minister [רש״י]. In this view, the leadership title is applied directly to Benaiah as yet another symbol of his great honor and high rank [מצודת דוד]. A third approach maintains that Benaiah himself held the status of a chief priest. Yet, despite his tribal lineage, his life took a different path. He operated first and foremost as a military man, never actually serving in official, formal priestly duties [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
