I Kings 2:46Sefaria

The execution of Shimei the son of Gera marks the final, decisive step in securing Solomon’s rule. Following a series of firm actions designed to guarantee the stability of the government, Benaiah left the king’s presence, led Shimei to the place of judgment, and put him to death [רד״ק]. This event highlights Solomon’s unwavering resolve to carry out the final instructions of his father, David, without allowing misplaced emotions to interfere [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Solomon understood the necessity of removing evil and punishing the wicked to deter future unrest. To protect the nation, a king possesses the unique authority to execute rebels and eliminate threats to national security, even if such actions step outside the standard boundaries of religious law [רלב״ג].

The direct outcome of these severe measures was the total stabilization of the state. Until this moment, a constant threat of rebellion hovered over Solomon from powerful, hostile figures like Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei. With the elimination of his final opponent, the fear of an uprising vanished completely. While Solomon's personal status as king had already been firmly established, the broader nation only achieved true peace and stability once these internal adversaries were removed [מלבי״ם].

Despite the fact that Solomon ordered the deaths of highly respected leaders and public figures, not a single person in the nation protested. The public recognized that these actions were carried out with absolute justice and fairness [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the resulting peace of the government serves as a clear sign of Divine approval, demonstrating that Solomon faced no punishment from God for ordering this string of executions [רש״י].
