Following the intense encounter, the medium brings the prepared food and serves it to Saul and his men [מצודת ציון]. Once the meal is finished, the men rise and begin their journey back to the military camp [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

This return journey through the night reveals tremendous bravery on Saul's part. He has just received absolute certainty that he and his sons will meet their end in the impending battle. Despite this crushing knowledge, he refuses to flee. Instead, he gathers his strength and chooses to head straight back to the battlefield. He willingly risks his life, making a conscious decision to fall in combat as a hero, taking his place among the men of renown and great warriors of ancient times [אברבנאל].
