שמואל א, פרק כ״ח, פסוק י״ב

I Samuel 28:12Sefaria

The summoning of a departed prophet from the grave brings an unexpected revelation, instantly stripping away a desperate king's disguise and plunging a practitioner of forbidden arts into sheer terror.

During a spiritual summoning, there is a clear division of experiences between the participants. The medium is the one who actually sees the rising spirit but cannot hear its voice, while the person seeking answers hears the spirit speak but remains unable to see it [מצודת דוד]. As the figure materialized, the woman recognized the prophet immediately. He appeared exactly as he was known in life, even wearing the familiar robe in which he had been buried [אברבנאל].

The very idea that a holy prophet could be summoned through impure sorcery raises significant wonder. One perspective explains that God intervened directly in the event. To prevent any foreign, impure force from taking hold of the prophet's pure form, God commanded the holy soul to descend and appear on its own, entirely bypassing the woman's dark magic [חומת אנך]. Another approach roots this event in the natural spiritual order following death. During the first twelve months after a person passes away, the lowest level of the soul maintains a connection to the physical body, making it susceptible to the influence of a medium, even as the highest level of the soul remains above with God [מלבי״ם].

Upon seeing the spirit, the woman let out a massive, terrified cry. The primary approach among commentators is that this reaction was triggered by a highly unusual visual phenomenon. Normally, spirits summoned through these rituals appear upside down. This time, however, the prophet rose standing upright in a dignified manner. Such a respectful posture is only assumed by a spirit when the person asking the questions is a king. Recognizing this undeniable sign of royalty, the medium instantly realized that her disguised client was none other than the king himself. This discovery filled her with a genuine fear of imminent death. Since it was King Saul who had outlawed and eradicated mediums from the land, she was convinced he had come in disguise to trap her, seeking a legal excuse to have her executed [רד״ק, אלשיך, אברבנאל].
