David finds himself trapped in a complex situation with no clear escape. Forced into a corner, he must make bold promises ahead of the war and simply hope for a positive outcome [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Responding to Achish, David speaks with calculated confidence. He assures him that because of the trust placed in him, Achish will personally witness his bravery and excellence on the battlefield, rather than merely hearing rumors of his success [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beneath this confident declaration lies a hidden motive. David understands Achish's true intentions and is inwardly pleased, as he has absolutely no intention of actually fighting against the Israelites. Outwardly, however, he acts as if he does not notice a thing, flawlessly projecting unwavering loyalty and assurance [מלבי״ם].

Convinced by this display, Achish responds by declaring his complete faith in David. To reassure him and remove any thought that he might still harbor doubts, Achish appoints David as his permanent bodyguard [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This role is considered a mark of immense honor, awarded in anticipation of the heroic deeds he expects David to perform [מצודת דוד].
