The prophet Samuel confronts King Saul with a piercing truth, drawing a direct line between a past failure and the unfolding tragedy. The root of the crisis traces back to the war against Amalek, where Saul failed to fully carry out the anger of God [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The current disaster facing Saul is understood through two complementary lenses. On an immediate level, it involves the terrifying reality of the Philistine army marching against Israel, coupled with God's absolute refusal to answer or assist the king [מצודת דוד]. Looking deeper into the past, this crisis is the final realization of an old prophecy. Years earlier, on the day Samuel's coat was torn, Saul was warned that the kingdom would be torn away from him. Now, that ancient decree is reaching its ultimate fulfillment [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The punishment operates on a strict principle of measure for measure. Just as Saul made a deliberate choice to ignore the voice of God, God is now actively turning away from him [מצודת דוד]. This dynamic perfectly explains the heavy silence of God during Saul's time of distress. Since the king already knew exactly why he was being punished from his previous encounter with Samuel, there was simply no need for God to answer him now or provide any further explanations for his tragic situation [מלבי״ם].
