I Samuel 28:21Sefaria

Following the dramatic encounter with the spirit of Samuel, the medium turns her attention to the king, who has collapsed on the ground in severe physical and emotional distress. Although she is already in the same room, she is described as coming toward him. Until this moment, she had been entirely engrossed and mentally distant, focused on the mystical act of raising the dead. Once Samuel delivered his message and Saul fell to the earth, she abruptly stopped the ritual to prevent any further harsh words from being spoken and physically closed the distance between them [אברבנאל]. Seeing his sheer terror, she approaches him with deep pity and compassion for his overwhelming fear [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To convince the shattered king to eat, the woman presents a moral argument based on her own obedience. She reminds him that she fully complied with his request to perform the séance [מצודת דוד]. She emphasizes the massive sacrifice she made, comparing her situation to someone holding an object in an open palm where it could slip away at any moment; just as easily, she left her life completely exposed to danger [מצודת דוד]. The primary approach among commentators is that this danger stemmed from violating the strict laws of the kingdom. Saul himself had previously mandated the death penalty for witchcraft and banished all mediums from the land. She had performed this forbidden act before even realizing her client was the king, fully aware that she was breaking a severe law [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that the risk was not solely legal but also spiritual, as the mystical act of necromancy carries a very real, life-threatening danger to the person performing it [רד״ק].

She further highlights her dedication by stressing that she did not merely perform a standard act of magic. Rather, at his direct urging, she took the extraordinary risk of raising a holy prophet of God [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. She lays out this entire case for one specific reason: since she obeyed his commands under such perilous conditions, it is only fair that he now listen to her. She asks him to accept the food she prepares so he can regain the strength needed to continue his journey [אברבנאל].
